ACTUARIAL SOCIETY 2012 CONVENTION
The 39th Convention of the Actuarial Society of South Africa was held from 16-17 October at the Cape Town International Convention Centre welcomed members from around the country, as well as many esteemed international guests and speakers.
Our annual convention is our primary vehicle for achieving the Society's mission:
- To ensure the relevance and enhance the role and reputation of the profession, both in South Africa and within the international actuarial community;
- to develop the expertise and skills of members and expand these to meet new opportunities as conditions change;
- to require that the professional conduct and skills of members meet the highest standards; and
- to harness the expertise of our members to establish a position of thought leadership to inform public debate.
The Convention is also a vehicle to promote communication and debate about all aspects of actuarial practice, research, and education in South Africa and in this regard the Committee is developing an exceptional programme to ensure quality professional development opportunities. The Convention is a two-day event and with the continued growth of and engagement with our membership, we expect well in excess of 1000 delegates to attend this year.
The 2012 theme was "Taking Charge of Uncertainty: Insight, Innovation and Integration" and the aim was to encourage discussion on how the actuarial profession can proactively navigate these extremely uncertain times. We asked ourselves the questions "How do we ensure that we channel our expert training to identify opportunities and develop the potential that lies within our own continent?" and "How can we partner effectively with other professions, services and government to find solutions to build a future that we would all like to live in?"
Join us in 2013 as we continue to discuss these and other issues and share the latest multi-disciplinary thinking with your actuarial colleagues at, whilst continuing the tradition of excellent Actuarial Society meetings.
